River and Rowing Museum

Planning Permission
Granted

March 1995

On 8 March, South Oxfordshire District Council granted planning permission for the second phase of the River and Rowing Museum building. This extension will enable the museum to increase the space available for exhibitions and provide additional rooms for educational and community use. The two buildings are joined at first floor level by a glazed bridge, which offers panoramic views of the river from Henley Bridge to Rod Eyot.

The two phases of building are designed to complement each other and form a harmonious whole. It is hoped that their construction will run concurrently, if additional funds are raised, and that the whole building will be completed by 1997.

The new museum is screened by existing poplar and oak trees, its form is reminiscent of local Henley boathouses. Constructed of green oak cladding above a glazed ground floor, the building reflects the natural environment.
